Design Space & St. John’s Join Forces On A Special Field

Last fall, Design Space installed a new STEAM educational center for St. John’s Episcopal School in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA. The school was so pleased with the results, they asked Design Space to perform some additional work. This included a new athletic field adjacent to the STEAM buildings and a new scoreboard for the field.

STEAM Classrooms

As the project design unfolded, so did the meaningfulness of the project. As reported by the Episcopal News and LA Times,

Last December, NFL star and St. John’s Episcopal School alumnus, Konrad Reuland died at the UCLA Medical Center after suffering a brain aneurysm. Konrad Reuland was a true academic athlete and played college football at Notre Dame and Stanford. He was drafted by the San Francisco 49’s in 2011 and went on to play for the Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and finally the Colts in 2016. Konrad passed in December of that year. For reasons known only to Konrad just 6 months earlier he had elected to be an organ donor. At the time of Konrad’s death, a Californian in his seventies was in the midst of recovering from a 3rd heart attack from which paramedics had to resuscitate him from death. A heart transplant was required for his life to continue. He was fortunate enough to find a compatible heart. Donors and recipients often remain anonymous, but within weeks the world learned that Konrad’s strong, generous heart was transplanted and now beats in legendary Twins and Angels Hall of Famer Rod Carew. As the Holy Spirit would have it, Carew himself is the parent of two St. John’s School graduates. In fact, as told by Rod Carew, he and Konrad had met and talked previously at St. John’s events, of course neither of them knowing how miraculously their lives would be joined in the near future. Head of school Michael Pratt and his colleagues, including the school’s generous benefactors, went to work quickly in the light of this mysterious and happy coincidence. The culmination of their efforts: The Konrad A. Reuland Memorial Field – dedicated September 15 at St. John’s, with Carew present alongside Konrad’s parents and grandparents – together as the “Carewland” family, as he calls them.

Rod Carew is in the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame. During his 19 year major league career he went to the All-Star game 18 consecutive years, has over 3,000 hits, and of more than 20,000 players that have played in the MLB, only 16 have stolen home base more than Carew.

Design Space Modular Buildings Agrees to Acquire Certain M Space Assets

Design Space and M Space, Inc. have reached an agreement for Design Space to purchase all of M Space’s mobile offices and modular building assets in the States of Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. M Space was in Chapter 11 bankruptcy, so the purchase required approval from the major creditors and bankruptcy court for M Space. This approval was granted November 9, 2016.

Effective that date, Design Space assumed all M Space modular building assets and leases in the referenced States. M Space operated nationally with a business model that spread them wide, and ultimately could not withstand the pressures of the recession and oil industry downturn. Design Space has a very different model where we concentrate our assets and staff to serve and control market share in specific geographic markets.

Design Space will absorb the M Space assets and leases into its closest branches and begin serving the existing lease clients immediately. These customers will benefit from Design Space’s close customer support for their current leases and have access to a large fleet of modular buildings, office trailers and storage units for any markets in which they may have a future need throughout the western US. These products can be used to satisfy immediate and temporary space requirements or Design Space can meet long-term needs with permanent modular construction.

Design Space Delivers STEAM Classroom Complex for St. John’s Episcopal School

Design Space Modular Buildings again delivers On-Time and On-Budget for an appreciative client. St. John’s Episcopal School made the strategic decision to transition to a STEAM based educational format. In other words, a curriculum that fully integrates the critical skills of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. This technology and hands-on approach to learning required a new specialized space outside of the conventional classroom buildings to anchor the program. And as is the case with most schools, it had to happen quickly during the months of July and August to be ready for the start of the new school year. The goal was a turnkey construction project completed in less than 3 months from start to finish. The solution the school board decided on was permanent modular construction provided by Design Space Modular Buildings. Ground-breaking was on June 10, and teachers moved in August 15. Just over 2 months to go from a grass field to the facility you see in the attached photos.

Below is an article from the Orange County Register summarizing the grand opening.

“Students at St. John’s Episcopal School can expect more opportunities for cutting-edge, authentic learning experiences with the introduction of the Johnson STEAM Center, the newest addition to the Rancho Santa Margarita campus. The innovative, state-of-the-art building was introduced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the city’s Chamber of Commerce Sept. 12. The school adopted a learning approach involving science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics more than three years ago to enhance its academic programs.

St. John’s serves kids from eight weeks old through eighth grade, according to the school’s website.

The center will house activities the school has already introduced to students. Some include Vex Robotics kits, 3D printers, green screens and laser cutters, according to a release. Other programs include instrumental music, Project Lead the Way and Mandarin Chinese.

“The Johnson STEAM Center will provide our students and teachers the space and tools required for innovative, project-based learning and ensure that St. John’s will continue to be a leader in STEAM education,” Head of School Dr. Michael Pratt said in the release.

The center provides a bigger space for students to work on projects. The facility will also house a robotics lab, science classroom and a fabrication space for a Makers lab.”

Founded in 1934, Great Western Malting Co. is the oldest malting company in the western United States, operating malt plants in Vancouver, Washington, and Pocatello, Idaho. Great Western Malting supplies brewers, distillers and food processors with the highest quality malts in the United States, Canada, Asia and South America. The growing popularity of craft beers and Idaho’s very reliable supply of quality malting barley are the reasons the Australian company that owns Pocatello’s Great Western Malting facility is going to pump $75 million into an expansion of the plant.

JH Kelly is the general contractor running the expansion project. Design Space is leasing them and the subcontractors on site 8,100 square feet of modular buildings and mobile office space and 7,700 square feet of storage containers to assist in construction. Design Space Quickly Dismantles Temporary Locker Rooms

Design Space can deliver quickly, and when necessary, demobilize in tight spots. Design Space provided four 3,000 square foot modular buildings for Claremont McKenna College to be used as Team Locker Rooms, Trainer’s Rooms, and an Equipment Room while Claremont constructed new permanent facilities. After construction was complete the path of travel was obstructed, so Design Space brought in the crews and equipment needed to get the job done safely and quickly. Within 2 days all four buildings were dismantled and removed to keep another phase of the project on track. Claremont’s teams can now move into their new facility and Design Space has a couple modular locker rooms and modular team rooms available to serve the next customer that needs these types of buildings, and needs them quickly!

Design Space Delivers Project Management Offices for New Power Plant

As communicated by Portland General Electric: The next 20 years, demand for electricity to serve Oregon customers is expected to increase more than 45 percent, compared to 30 percent nationally. PGE’s new Carty Generating Station will help PGE serve existing customer demand, meet additional growth and maintain a reliable supply of power. The new 440-megawatt, clean energy, natural gas-fired Carty Generating Station will use a G-class turbine capable of producing enough electricity to serve about 300,000 residential customers.

The site at Boardman was a brand new location built from the ground up. Everything that was needed to support construction had to be brought to the site. This included an array of modular buildings, mobile offices, and portable storage containers to serve as project management offices for PGE, the general contractor, and jobsite offices for the sub-contractors. The contract to provide the modular buildings, mobile offices, and containers was won by Design Space Modular Buildings by its Tri-Cities branch. As a true testament to Design Space’s capabilities in sales, products and service, they provided the entire requirement of site offices, and not one other competitor provided a building or container to this site. The total requirement for the project included (32) modular complex floors, (3) mobile offices, (12) 20’ containers, (24) 40’ containers, and (8) Ground Level Offices. Another impressive project completed by Design Space, the leader in providing remote jobsite offices.

Design Space Modular Buildings Delivers Temporary Office Space to NASA

The Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex (GDSCC), commonly called the Goldstone Observatory, is located in the Mojave Desert near Barstow California. Operated by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, its main purpose is to track and communicate with space missions. It is named after Goldstone, California, a nearby gold-mining ghost town.

Five large parabolic (“dish”) antennas are located at the Goldstone site to maintain communication with up to 30 spacecraft. The antennas function similarly to a home satellite dish.

Global aerospace, defense, information and services company, Exelis Inc. required immediate temporary office space at the site. Design Space Modular Buildings was the selected provider. The requirement was for high quality relocatable modular buildings to serve as site offices for operations and maintenance of the dishes. Within a few days, two 10×44 mobile offices were delivered and installed, ready for use. Additional mobile office trailers and portable storage containers will be added as need arises.
